President Diane Aliprandi called the meeting to order at 5:05pm.

Old Business

  • Nursing Alumni were involved in different activities during the summer, including Vesper’s in May for WB and Keokuk campuses. Both ceremonies went well and there was good alumni support for each event. Diane and Leanne worked with the SCC Golf Outing, which helps with scholarships. Diane worked with the SNA WB students during a car wash and raised $250 for the flood victims. The money was given to the Flood 2008 fund through Two Rivers Bank.  The Hawk Eye even put an article and photos in the paper. The SNA WB evening/weekend class helped to fill sandbags during the flood. It was done during their clinical time.

  • Discussed about continuing to collect crank flashlights for Vickie White’s next trip to Haiti. 10 have been collected so far. Will continue to watch for deals and encourage other alumni to collect. Unknown of when Vickie will be making next trip.

  • Diane stated that Donald is looking to update the website soon, hoping to make it more user-friendly. Hopes to be up after the first of the year.

New Business

  • Encouraging ways to get involved with students at each campus. Jeanie mentioned that WB campus does presentations regarding evidence-based practice. Thoughts were to see if students would be interested in doing presentations at a meeting. Mary Saxton mentioned that the WB SNA started putting out a newsletter. Diane will contact Jennifer Martarano, SNA Pres, to get information.

  • Discussed options to get more interest. Options discussed regarding working with local hospitals to help sponsor CEU’s. It was mentioned about talking with Sue F @ GRMC regarding evidence practice ideas for possible CEU’s.

  • Discussed ways to keep current members up to date and keep informed. A quarterly newsletter was suggested. Would like to aim for January edition. Topics would include marriages, births, recognition for certifications, CEU’s, refresher classes and evidence-based practice tips. Also suggested was that there were new changes with the nursing programs, like new uniforms, and thinking that alumni would like to find out new info. Mary said she would get a picture of the old/new uniforms.

  • Diane mentioned that the SCC Vision reaches all alumni and seeing if we could write an article to put in the Vision, hoping to reach more people. Diane will contact Jeff Ebbing regarding that.

  • Le Bowen contacted Diane regarding the SCC WB evening/weekend Vesper’s, scheduled for Dec. 19th @ 6:30pm. It was asked if we could help serve refreshments and help with clean-up. It was agreed that we would be willing to help. Diane will contact Le and will also send out a notice to others that might want to help.

KEOKUK — “We’re always taking care of everybody else, but who’s taking care of us?” Diane Aliprandi’s rhetorical question was posed in a recent interview in which she discussed the Nursing Chapter of the SCC Alumni Assn.

The Burlington Hawk Eye Newspaper was present and created a video featured on The Hawk Eye’s website.
Here is a link to the video.

Aliprandi is the chairperson of the chapter, which is the first of its kind for Southeastern Community College. The SCC nursing alumni group was established nearly a year ago.

According to Aliprandi, the chapter’s formation started out as an idea spurred by her involvement in the student nursing group while a nursing student at SCC and from discussion among fellow students and SCC nursing faculty.

The chapter will celebrate its first year next month on SCC’s West Burlington campus. “The whole point [is] to be there for nursing students, to be there for each other as nurses,” explained Aliprandi during an interview last November.

Last week on SCC’s south campus here, Aliprandi and about 15 other nurses gathered to hear the experiences of Vickie White, a nurse and SCC alumna who, last fall, traveled to Haiti on a medical mission trip.

During the chapter’s November meeting, the SCC nursing alumni heard from Carolyn Miller, a nurse who spent years working in Liberia.

Vickie White

January 17t & February 28, 2008 Vickie White gave a presentation about her nursing mission trip to Haiti.  The information she gave was very enlightening.  We take a lot of things for granted that other don’t have and may not ever have.

The Hawk Eye was present and created a video about her trip.
